One of EWB's main projects is the issue of
security, fight against corruption and illegal immigration in the Western
Balkans. We are aware that this is not an easy mission, because crime in the Western Balkans mostly resembles „Lernian hydra” (?e??a?a ?d?a),
a creature from Greek mythology with a serpent body and numerous heads spewing
poison.
And indeed, at
times it does seem as if the whole of the Western Balkans is permeated with its
poisonous fumes. But unfortunately, here the myths end and stark reality begins
with a vast number of vicious, crime-related murders.
Albania, FYROM (former
Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia
and Serbia make up the Western Balkans, a concept introduced by Europe, comprising countries that strive to be
involved in European and Euro-Atlantic integrations. It is in this context that
the political strategy for integration has been defined through Stability and Association
Process (SAP). Based on previous experiences, EU has prepared and established
political framework and laid out a road map which countries from this area
should stick to in order to blend into European milieu in the quickest and best
possible way.
