Stanje energetskog sektora i rusko – srpski energetski odnosi

STATE OF POLITICAL PLAY IN SERBIA

S U M M A R Y

- Frog in the Well, but Lately Full of Surprises-

When one used to analyze the events and politics in the Balkans, the anecdote of the frog in the well used to come to mind almost immediately. Two step forwards , one step back. But lately there are some very positive signs, and some of them are definitely "firsts" in a region with too much history and most of it recently bad. Namely, there are appearing over the political horizon two politicians who are showing the traits of statesmen - and they do not suffer from a typical Balkan politician's impediment of not knowing how to say sorry. They do, and that has definitely not been recorded in the history of this region before.

Presidents of Serbia and Croatia, Boris Tadic and Ivo Josipovic, have apologized to the victims of the recent wars in ex-Yugoslavia and for the war crimes and atrocities committed in the name of their respective countries. They met three times over the past few months in rapid succession and restored the shaky relationship between the two biggest and most influential countries in the region whose relations are the mainstay of stability in the Balkans.

Attitude of Citizens of Serbia towards Decentralisation and Regionalisation

EXECECUTIVE SUMMARY

Regionalization and decentralization are two topics that have started only recently to be discussed among the Serbian public. Regionalization is for now being only referred to in the context of creation of statistical regions while the de facto regionalisation is being postponed for a better political situation in the future. Decentralization is not being even mentioned except for the context of EU integration.

QUESTION OF SECURITY, FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IN THE WESTERN BALKANS

E X C E R P T S

One of EWB's main projects is the issue of security, fight against corruption and illegal immigration in the Western Balkans. We are aware that this is not an easy mission, because  crime in the Western Balkans mostly resembles „Lernian hydra” (?e??a?a ?d?a), a creature from Greek mythology with a serpent body and numerous heads spewing poison.

And indeed, at times it does seem as if the whole of the Western Balkans is permeated with its poisonous fumes. But unfortunately, here the myths end and stark reality begins with a vast number of vicious, crime-related murders.

Albania, FYROM (former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia make up the Western Balkans, a concept introduced by Europe,  comprising countries that strive to be involved in European and Euro-Atlantic integrations. It is in this context that the political strategy for integration has been defined through Stability and Association Process (SAP). Based on previous experiences, EU has prepared and established political framework and laid out a road map which countries from this area should stick to in order to blend into European milieu in the quickest and best possible way.
